20.30 OPENING

21.30
Supporting Film: THE IMMIGRANT
US 1917. Director: Charlie Chaplin. With Charlie Chaplin, Edna Purviance, Eric Campbell. 31 min.

Chaplin’s first masterpiece: the little tramp’s arrival in the promised land, the United States of America. But even before their ship passes the statue of liberty, Charlie gets seasick and all of Edna’s money is stolen. And as in all his other films, it’s about the daily bread: the scene where Charlie and a fellow passenger share a soup in heavy seas is unforgettable – when the plate unavoidably lurches to and fro across the table between the two.

Preview: NACHTSCHICHTEN
A 2010. Director: Ivette Löcker. 97 Min. Eng. subs.

A film about Berlin. Not a Symphony of a Great City, but a film noir. Over the city, helicopters with infraredcameras are circling around. But the graffiti artists still find security in the cover of the night and leave their signature. And so DJ Mieko Suzuki can rightly claim that the night is more colourful than the day. Homeless people are attended to, an insomniac plays basketball, ducks are fed, boars are chased away. Ivette Löcker is weaving a fragile web between the city population of the night, sometimes dazzlingly flashy, sometimes in timeles melancholy.

Afterwards: Opening party in brut_logo with DJ Little Joe's Gang!

SUZIE WASHINGTON
A 1998. Director: Florian Flicker. With Birgit Doll, August Zirner, Wolfram Berger, Karl Ferdinand Kratzl. 87 min. Engl. subs.

„I’m not a criminal, I’m a tourist!“ Nana Iaschwili, a citizen of the former Soviet Union, is scratching along with a wrong American name in provincial Austria to escape her impending deportation. On the way, she meets three very different men: a shy summer-holidaymaker, a bank robber on the run, and a hospitable lodge keeper in the mounains. “The issue is feeling alien”, says Florian Flicker about his film: a relaxed road movie – serious topic, jolly humour.

21.30 IMPORT EXPORT
A 2007. Director: Ulrich Seidl. Mit Ekateryna Rak, Paul Hofmann, Michael Thomas, Georg Friedrich, Maria Hofstätter. 135 min. Engl. subs.

Seidl and how he sees Europe. A proper Viennese takes his stepson with him to Slovakia to set up slot machines. Meanwhile, Olga, a Ukrainian nurse looking for a job in Austria, after several humiliations and jobs ends up at the nursing home for the elderly – as a cleaning lady. Not an easy film, but a masterpiece, which demands endurance and a lot of empathy – also and especially for the male characters, who are suitable as rolemodels only to a certain extent.

A 2001. Director: Ruth Beckermann. 84 min. Engl. subs.

Scenes from the Marc Aurel-Straße, at Café Salzgries and in front of the last Jewish textile salesman’s shop in the neighborhood. Ruth Beckermann shows „her“ Vienna. It’s like in a village, everyone knows each other: the gastronome Kalb, the poet Gerstl, the director Novotny, the artist Ponger, the author Schuh. Short, everyday encounters, at the same time an irretrievable document: after the take-over of the Café, te death of Adolf Doft and the closing of his shop, the street feels very different today.

21.30 CRASH TEST DUMMIES
A 2005. Director: Jörg Kalt. With Maria Popistasu, Bogdan Dumitrache, Simon Schwarz, Viviane Bartsch, Kathrin Resetarits, Barbara Albert. 93 Min. Engl. subs.
A Romanian couple gets stranded in Vienna, but instead of findeing the freedom they had hoped for, Ana and Nicolae soon encounter difficulties. She runs into a car, he into a fist, their paths diverge. The film’s main site (and at the same time a beautiful metaphor for the circulation of people, goods, identities) is the train station Wien-Mitte, which looks like a suburb of Bucharest. There, writer and director Jörg Kalt has the different story lines reconvene and disperse again: „Look, I don’t know where I am and you don’t know where I am – so, how will we meet?“ A bright Odyssee.

21.30 SHIP OF FOOLS
US 1965. Director: Stanley Kramer. Mit Vivien Leigh, Oskar Werner, Simone Signoret, Charles Korvin, Lee Marvin, Heinz Rühmann, José Ferrer. 149 Min. OV

All-Star-Parade on a luxury liner crossing the Atlantic, a microcosm of the world in 1933: Globetrotter, wealthy widows, American businessmen, deserted wives, a gigantic baseball player and a little German Jew. Highly dramatic, sometimes soppy, but by all means beautiful: Ossi Werner as a heart-sick ship’s doctor, hoping to be saved by Simone Signoret’s love. Camera by Ernest Laszlo, music by Ernest Gold, both emigrés and quite a grave film!
