Sulukule, a poor quarter in Istanbul, is one of the oldest places in the world where Roma settled down. In 2005, the city council decided to restructure the whole former entertainment area: To knock down the old houses, to resettle the old-established residents and to build a completely new exclusive residential area. History and culture are simply being dredged away. For once, no progress would be preferable.

The murderous war in former Yugoslavia, reflected in the microcosm of a Serbian family of former guest workers living in Vienna. When Sascha who had been forced into fighting succeeds in moving to Austria with his Bosnian wife Suza, the dissolution of the family speeds up in a tragic manner: conflicts resurface, at the workplace as well as at home, xenophobia and anti-Serbian propaganda add their bit. With the off-screen narration, memory images and dream sequences, Jugofilm describes impressively how war disfigures humans.

“With all my heart I still love the man I killed ...” Bette, as we love her! The wife of the owner of a caoutchouc plantation, she kills her lover out of jealousy. To save her neck, he has to try and buy back a discrediting letter from the murdered's Malay wife. In its key scene, the film manages wholly without dialogue, and just with the tinkling of a few aolian harps, beautifully orchestrated by Max Steiner.

An American trading ship is torpedoed: nine survivors sit together in a lifeboat, one of them is a Nazi collaborator. None but John Steinbeck himself wrote the story, only Hitchcock could make a film out of it on such a narrow location. For the actors, there is no escape, but we all know that necessity is the mother of invention. Tallulah Bankhead, the touchy gossip reporter, can strongly recommend her Brillos as a bait for the fish – „I went for it myself, didn't I?”.

A social horror story in the style of a horror film. Legendarily spectacular stop-motion sequences, especially the one with King Kong climbing the at the time brand new Empire State Building. At the end of the shooting, RKO Pictures were almost broke. The producers were the only ones who still believed in its success and put their own money in it, composer Max Steiner remembers: „Maxie, go ahead and score the picture!“ Steiner's score, which he wrote entirely specially for the film, became seminal for Hollywood.
